The pH Scale

Important Points To Remember

  • The pH scale measures how acidic or basic a solution is.
  • The pH scale goes from 0 to 14.
  • A pH of 0–6 is acidic, pH 7 is neutral, and pH 8–14 is basic.
  • Lower pH means more H⁺ ions and a more acidic solution.
  • Higher pH means fewer H⁺ ions and a more basic solution.
  • Pure water has a pH of 7, which is neutral.
  • Each change of 1 pH unit means a 10-fold change in H⁺ concentration.
Question 1. Which of these liquids has a pH of 7?
Question 2. A solution has a very high H⁺ concentration. How would you describe it?
Question 3. Which pH value shows a basic solution?
